You're right, it was something in my .emacs.
*Now*, the help buffer says
find-grep-dired is an interactive Lisp function in `.emacs'.
which would have made it more clear. I am kind of baffled by why it
told me

before, but I did really cut and paste it from the buffer, not type it
in myself. :-\
