Hi, about:

I'm the Athena eclipse locker maintainer. Did this happen right after launch?
It looks a lot like a known issue documented in the README.athena file at
the top level of the locker:

There is an intermittent problem with this version of Eclipse which we
haven't been able to resolve. It shows up as a crash on launch, right
after the splash screen initializes and just before the GUI should
open. The error messages are verbose and typical of Java error output,
with a reference to libgobject-2.0.so near the beginning. This seems
to be a known issue but fixes are hard to come by; it's most likely due
   to a GTK bug.

If you retry, you should eventually get it to launch though this may take
a number of attempts (possibly as many as 8-10). Some users are affected
more than others (we've seen failed launch attempts vary from about 10%
to 80% for different users) but we don't know why.

Once it does launch it appears to run correctly

Unfortunately there's not much I can do about this. Googling doesn't turn
up much that is useful, and I suspect that this is something caused by our
locker environment, perhaps a timing issue with AFS. If retrying eventually
gives you a successful launch, it's almost certainly the same issue.

If it happens all the time (note you may have to try as many as 10 times or
so to get it to work if you're running into the known problem) and you want
to report it, I'd suggest using Oracle's bug reporting system for Java and/or
Bugzilla for Eclipse, but I don't hold out a lot of hope for a fix anytime
soon.

Sorry I can't be more helpful.
