Hi Alec,

The Debathena cluster machines have login sandboxes, so you should just be 
able to "sudo aptitude install mr" (or apt-get, if that's what you 
prefer); the package will get cleaned up when you log out. Same for 
emacs-snapshot and irssi.

pip isn't available in the Ubuntu repositories, but you should be able to 
install it by running easy_install with sudo.
