9.4.46 linux VMs hanging

Both Mark Manley and I have noted that newly installed (since the
installer changes last week) 9.4.46 virtual linux machines (in my
case, on VMware server, in his, on 2 different versions of Xen)
consistantly hang in the middle of running mkserv ops. Neither of us
has had a chance to try this on bare hardware yet. (On the VMware
machine) The hang seems to happe regardless of whether the SMP or
non-SMP kernel is used, and regardless of whether X is running or not.
In the case wehre X isn't running, I actually see a dignostic message
befor the machine hangs:

The machine hangs hard and stops even pinging.
