Hi.
You are correct; the volfs service is apparently disabled on
most Suns, with the exceptions being those machines which
updated from 9.3 at 9.4.38 or later.
The problem is a bug in Sun patch 118833-36, which we applied
in the 9.4.38 Athena release, leaving the service in its
default state of disabled. A separate problem, where a new
service is not initialized properly from the miniroot
environment, resulted in the service being enabled on a
machine which applied the Sun patch during the update
from 9.3.
I have submitted a patch which will change the service's
default state to enabled. This will appear in the next
patch release for Solaris.
