In my experience, iirc, it's not that the logout takes a long time, but it 
takes longer than 20 minutes for the screensaver timer to actually reach 
20 minutes such that the Ctrl-L functionality is activated.  Once that 
happens, pressing Ctrl-L (and waiting a short amount of time) will log the 
user out.

In any case, Ctrl-Alt-F1, Ctrl-Alt-Delete should work.
