This sounds remarkably like the 1.1.4 -> 2.x update glitch noted in
/mit/ooffice_v2.2/README.athena. Have you tried the workaround noted at the
end of that file? Be careful with the rm -fr ~/.openoffice.org2* as it will
delete any customizations you may have made... you may want to move that
directory aside and repopulate the new one that gets created with some of
its contents.
