A little more data on this:
Yes, Nautilus is failing to auto-mount CDs on Athena machines.
hald is now running on Athena machines, as root. Adding a haldaemon
user and rebooting does not seem to change who it gets run as.
Adding a dbus user causes dbus to run, but still doesn't get Nautilus
to auto-mount CDs. So there's some other factor there which I haven't
figured out.
I've been told that some Athena machines lack /etc/fstab entries for
/mnt/cdrom. My test machine does have such an entry, which allows
users to "mount /mnt/cdrom". If some machines are lacking that entry,
that may also be an impediment to auto-mounting CDs, even if we fix
the passwd file problem and the other unknown factor.
