the resultant kludge intermediary system presumably will chain
together like transactions (i.e., followups on a base note), preserve
flag (director bit) information, etc.  

it is also important that any of the discuss user agents (xdiscuss,
emacs discuss, and the icky command-line discuss) be able to set the
appropriate flags.

if these are met, then robin and i don't object to this conversion.
