I get a ^? instead of a backspace

/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults/XTerm
has changed in 9.4.28; there was a section in 9.4.27 that said
! Athena addition:
*eightBitInput: false
*ttyModes: erase ^?
that has been removed. However, the eightBitInput line has been moved
to the end, replacing a line that said "*metaSendEscape: true". Though
both lines are still under the "Bug fix for bugzilla bug #49315"
comment.
jmorzins (on a 9.4.27 linux athena box) notes that his
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults/XTerm and
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults/XTerm.athena are identical; mine has an
edited Xterm file.
