So, as Alex notes, my Intellistation is the only one for which this 
does not happen.  I know that at one point I was playing around with 
the Matrox binary driver, but I'm pretty sure I uninstalled that, and 
in fact xorg.conf claims I'm using the Xorg driver.

However, my machine is not even a little bit related to a stock 
Athena machine at this point.  That said, I'm happy to test things if 
anyone has any ideas.
