OLC got a user question yesterday about enabling sound on the new
HP workstations in the cluster. After poking around, I discovered
that the /dev/snd directory was not getting chown'd/chmod'ed to the
current user by XStartup, which prevents normal users from getting
access to the sound device. The full discussion is message 54830=20
in the 'oother' discuss meeting.
Each user should get mixer defaults somehow so that channels are
by default unmuted and set to non-earsplitting levels, however that
ends up being implemented, as well. (This is a longstanding issue
with Fedora-derived distributions.)
