As far as I can tell, this is a bad interaction between the version of
BIND we use (9.1.2) and something odd Google is or was doing. The
problem doesn't seem to be well-understood, partly because BIND 9.1.2
isn't in terribly wide use.
I haven't seen reports of this problem or noticed it myself in a while,
so perhaps Google changed their practices. We will be upgrading the
version of BIND we use in this summer's full Athena release.
