And here I feel silly for long ago having concluded that a) everyone already
was seeing the same thing, and b) it was something we had to accept along
with whatever upgrade had just happened.  However, as far as the theory
that authenticated SMTP is slower, I attempted to ameliorate the problem
for myself by deciding I didn't always need authentication, and wrote an
alias to move my tickets aside before running comp.  The exact same delay
was still there.
