Not to sound like a "Me too" post, but I noticed this a while ago, using
both pine and MH, and even in programs that call sendmail directly.  ISTR
zephyr discussions at the time chalked it up to "authenticated SMTP is
slower" or something, so I didn't think much about it after that.
Perhaps that's not actually the case, then...
