If I do an xlogin as root, then logout by typing "exit" or "logout" at
the only shell, then login as a user, there's a bogus finger entry that
shows up.

[cfox@red-herring]cfox$ finger @breakout
[breakout.MIT.EDU]
Login Name Tty Idle Login Time Office Office Phone
opuser Athena Operations pts/1 Apr 11 20:49 (:0.0)
opuser Athena Operations pts/0 Apr 11 20:49 (:0.0)
root root pts/1 Apr 11 20:48 (:0.0)

[cfox@red-herring]cfox$ finger @breakout
[breakout.MIT.EDU]
No one logged on.

[cfox@red-herring]cfox$ finger @breakout
[breakout.MIT.EDU]
Login Name Tty Idle Login Time Office Office Phone
opuser Athena Operations pts/1 Apr 11 20:51 (:0.0)
opuser Athena Operations pts/0 Apr 11 20:51 (:0.0)
root root pts/1 Apr 11 20:48 (:0.0)

After the user logs out, root's entry no longer shows up, but it
reappears when the user logs back in. (The three finger examples are
sequential over a few minutes, as opuser logs in and out on breakout.)

Logging in on the text console as root doesn't produce a new bogus
finger entry, or change the old one; a second xlogin root login replaces
the entry. The idle time seems always to be that of the user, not the
(possibly much older) root login.

There's no process with a start time corresponding to the extra finger
entry.
