Timothy,
In a recent OLC question, you asked why the xdvi program was unable
to preview the document /mit/gnu/dvi/gcc.dvi. The consultant who
answered your question said:

This answer is only partially correct. Xdvi isn't "broken," it just
doesn't have the capability to preview documents that were meant to
use built in PostScript fonts rather than TeX fonts. All of the
documents in the gnu locker use the TimesRoman family of fonts, so
xdvi can't preview them.
Some time in the fall, a new verson of xdvi which can handle
PostScript fonts (to some extent) will be placed in the sipb locker.
In the mean time, you'll have to print out those document that can't
be previewed, or find the TeX/info sources for the documents and read
them instead.
I hope this helps.
