   It is unclear why this would be a good and useful thing to do.  Can you
   offer a rationale?

When I first brought over the scribe thesis files I was sort of
overwhelmed by the number of things in there.  I really only had to
look at chapter.mss, etc but that wasn't immediately apparent to me.
I don't think this is a major issue, but if only the files that the
user had to edit were visible it would help naive non-scribers like me
figure out what we had to do.  

Alternatively, were the files not in my directory at all, but only in
some system directory which scribe searched, I'd be even happier.

Not a biggie.
