A workaround is to set the environment variable COMPILER_PATH to
/usr/ccs/bin so that gcc uses the system ld.
I haven't figured out a fix to make gnu ld compatible with -m64. Simply
upgrading to a newer version of binutils doesn't work, nor does
configuring binutils with --enable-64-bit-bfd or
--enable-targets=sparcv9-sun-solaris2.
