Hi,
I'm with OLC (Athena Consulting), and a user recently contacted us
with the following problem. He uses emacs RMAIL, and often resends
mail to another address using the "M-x message-resend" command.
Recently, in many such attempts, the string "+Spamscreen" will be
added to the destination address somewhere in the sending process
(i.e., "foo@bar.com" will become "foo+Spamscreen@bar.com"), and
the mail will fail to be delivered.
I had a hunch this was due to some failed attempt at cleverness on
the part of the sending computer, so I ran some tests with the OLC
test user, paco. Every Athena server I tried will correctly forward
messages that were not marked as spam by MIT's spamscreen, but I get
inconsistent results when I try to resend spam messages:
scar.mit.edu, a Linux workstation, will always append "+Spamscreen"
to the To: address in the above manner.
cruella-de-vil.mit.edu, a Solaris workstation, will never append
"+Spamscreen", nor will grumpy-fuzzball.mit.edu, one of the Athena
dialup servers.
however, home-on-the-dome.mit.edu, another one of the dialups, *will*
append "+Spamscreen" to the To: address.
I realize that emacs RMAIL is not a supported mail program, but I do
not believe this is the fault of RMAIL, which is why I am reporting it.
I don't know what could be the cause of this issue, but it seems like
it is the fault of the individual Athena server used for the resending.
I note that sending mail to "cda+Spamscreen@mit.edu" results in the
mail getting properly delivered to me (and the addition of the string
has no bearing on the Spam score or where the message gets filed).
Other ISP's, however, cannot be counted on to obey this standard...
Full headers for the above tests are below. I tested resending spam
from paco@mit.edu to cda@beer.com (an address I have on another ISP).
