(I just want to note this in case it turns out to be common; I don't
expect a solution.)
I've seen one case in which evolution at some point managed to let go
with both hands, and eat the file:
~/.gconf/apps/evolution/summary/rdf/%gconf.xml
The details of this case are in omail[35663]; the file contains the list
of RSS feeds that the user subscribes to and in this case, it's loss
wasn't noticed until after a vacation, so we restored from backup tape.
