What were you trying to do?
	Here's a much simpler send_message issue:

I ran matlab on a Linux machine, and noticed that
the launcher script didn't show me the messages for
	"matlab7.0_avail" or "openafsavail".

What's wrong:
	The matlab launcher script sets
	    $swtoolsDir="/afs/athena/software/swtools
	and then tries to launch
	    $swtoolsDir/bin/send_message

The swtools locker's bin directory is a symlink to
arch/@sys/bin, but the swtools locker does not have
an arch/i386_rhel3 directory. So "swtools/bin" is
a broken symlink, and the matlab launcher cannot find
	$swtoolsDir/bin/send_message.

What should have happened:
I should have seen the messages for "matlab7.0_avail"
	and for "openafsavail".

If the swtools locker had an arch/i386_rhel3 directory, the
matlab launcher script would have shown me the messages.

As a different solution, the launcher script could
have used "athdir" to locate any $ATHENA_SYS_COMPAT bin
directories in the swtools locker, instead of hardcoding
the arch/@sys/bin directory of the swtools locker.
