Are you sure you mean xterm here, and not gnome-terminal?  Some testing
suggests to me that gnome-terminal displays '?' characters when it
doesn't know what to do, and xterm just displays nothing.

I can confirm your symptoms with gnome-terminal on a 9.2 Linux machine. 
I think this summer's 9.3 release may improve the situation, at least on
Linux.  I will (ideally) do some more thorough testing on Tuesday and
get back to you with a better answer.
