What's wrong:

/usr/man should be in the default MANPATH. For athena
as it currently stands this is not a problem because only
the package ld.so installs man pages there, and those man pages
are replicated by the man-pages package. However, other
"foreign" RPMS like to put man pages in /usr/man (in my case
gifsicle), so the correct action is to put /usr/man in the
man path, rather than complain about the anomalous ld.so
package.
