What were you trying to do?
A user came in to the OLC office complaining that he could not view
realplayer video files. We tried looking at a movie trailer in the realplayer
format, and it crashed his Mozilla. He was also wondering if he could view
Quicktime versions instead with xanim. After he left, I tried the realplayer
formats. On one of the Dell machines in the OLC office, I got the error:
"this page contains information of a type (audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin)
that can only be viewed with the appropriate plug-in. click ok to download
plugin."
In the "Edit->Preferences->Navigator->Helper Applications" menu, I saw an
entry for type "audio/x-pn-realaudio" and tried adding a new entry for
"audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin" but with the same path to realplay
(/mit/infoagents/arch/@sys/bin/realplay), and got the exact same error as
before. I tried the same thing on a SunBlade workstation in the office
(both with and without the addition of the "-plugin" entry) and got a
different error:
"invalid file version number"
At this point, I gave up on Realplayer and tried setting up xanim to view
Quicktime files, again trying with movie trailers as an example. I added
an entry in the "Edit->Preferences->Navigator->Helper Applications" menu
for files of type "video/quicktime" and gave it the following path:
"/mit/graphics/bin/xanim". I also ran "add graphics". When I tried
viewing Quicktime files on the apple.com site, I was prompted to download
Quicktime instead of running xanim. When I tried viewing Quicktime files
from other sources than apple.com, the download manager popped up and a new
window opened, but no video played. The file had downloaded to /tmp, so I
tried opening it from the command line, and got the following error:
