When I tested this, it did indeed fail, but not with the same error
message as the panel menu items do. Instead, I got an error message
about being unable to chmod a directory inside ~/.gnome2. (This error
message is coming from gnome-terminal itself, not from sawfish.) Are
you sure it was the same error message?
