Hi Folks,
I have a Dell system with a reasonably standard Adaptec card using the
aic7xxx driver with a Seagate Cheetah 18 GB hard disk. It's one of 5
identical systems that have been running Linux Athena for over a year.
A few days ago, the disk crashed (no local data) and I received a
replacement disk from Dell today.
Now however, I'm having difficulty installing the system.
Are there any special instructions for a SCSI only installation?
The system boots off the install floppy, gets an IP address, and goes all
the way to the "5 second warning before total data disaster", and then gets
to a point where it says I need to apparently configure a driver by hand.
(This occurs whether or not I boot "linux dd" with the driver disk from the
bootkit locker.)
When I enter a '?' to get a list of the available drivers, I get an error
from "find" about not being able to use some version of GCLIB. If I enter
"custom" to get a shell, I can see (lsmod) that the aic7xxx and the
scsi_mod drivers are loaded, but I can't get it to load the "sd_mod"
driver. (The "sd_mod" driver is used on the other 4 systems that are
running normally.)
As far as I can tell, either I'm doing something wrong or there is a bug in
the installer, and I'm hoping you can tell me which. (And I'm really
hoping you can provide a solution. :-)
Thanks,
--Tom
P.S. I can provide much more detail if that is desired. --tec
