What were you trying to do?
     Update the "Contacts" in Evolution

What's wrong:
	A dialog popped up, saying
	"The addressbook backend for
	file:///mit/vchudnov/evolution/local/Contacts/addressbook.db has
crashed. You will have to restart Evolution in order to use it
again." The contacts window only shows some of my contacts and
not, as normally happens, all of them.

I restarted evolution, tried going to the address book again,
	and the same thing happened.

The address book file is still there. And when I try to compose
mail, it knows about the addresses for the people who weren't
displayed in the Contacts window (so that part's fine).

What should have happened:
Address book should have worked normally.
