Do you know what version of the installer you were using, then and now,
and which network device you originally used? The current install CD has
both the 3c589_cs and sis900 drivers, and should in theory work with
either. (It should also have the orinoco drivers, but due to a rather
stupid bug I've just found, it doesn't.)

Various useful logging happens via the #3 and #4 virtual terminals during
the install; it might also be helpful to look at this output (hit Alt-F3
or Alt-F4 once the fancy coloured screens come up) to see if there are
any obvious errors being reported, and to see what modules were tried.

If the above doesn't shed any light on it, could I get access to the
machine at some point?

Finally, as a practical matter, if your hardware worked with an older
version of the install media, you can still use that to reinstall,
although I'd still like to find the root of the problem. (Also note that
backwards compatability with older media is *not* to be relied on, though
we do try.)
