Hi Burke,
Regarding your problem with the "preferences" window in MATLAB: is it reproducible e.g. does the window always open completely minimized whenever you try to open it?
I tried the same thing as you on Athena Linux 9.2.20 and Solaris and the window came out fine. However, I couldn't resize it either.
