The GNOME 2 terminal is known to be slow, particularly on Solaris. This
is largely due to the introduction of a new, less optimized terminal
widget and the introduction of anti-aliased fonts. The situation on
Solaris may improve a little bit when Sun finishes implementing Xrender
support in its server, but other than incorporating those patches,
there's not much we can do about the problem.
(The GNOME terminal program is called gnome-terminal, not xterm. xterm
is still as zippy as it always has been, if you want to run that
instead.)
