Sorry for not being more clear. Sharon was running the new .cshrc from
/usr/athena/prototype_user, but running a trimmed down form of the
.login that was provided when athena swicthed from timesharing to
workstations. Athena has released two set of . files. The older one
sources /usr/athena/.login if it exists which is how we put in the fix
for xlogin. Unfortunatly, Sharon removed that line and copied the
relevant code to her own .login file. She therefore would not start a
window manager as the old .login relied on ttyv0. What we are doing is
that /usr/athena/.login sees if you have your display variable set, you
are on an xterm and not ttyv0. If so, start a window manager. 

The whole problem comes about from the 2 types of .logins that we must
mainatin.
