What is my problem here with listmaint? Has this already been spotted
by others? When will I be able to use listmaint? Et cetera...

Connection to SMS server failed
The most likely cause of the problem here is not specific to listmaint
per se, but is a more general SMS problem: The SMS server does not run
100% of the time. It occasionally dies, and is sometimes turned off
to prevent updates to the database while other high-priority work on
the database is being done.
If you wait a while (a couple of hours, or sometimes until the next
day or so), you should be able to reach the SMS server again. If not,
check with someone like Mark Rosenstein or Jeff Schiller who might
know what's going on.
