tar (vax 6.0R) restores files with correct permissions, ownerships,
and dates. symbolic links are owned by root, and made at extract
time. while it might be hard to change the date on symbolic links,
they should at least be chowned to the prior owner. is this
information in the archive? if so, it should be ised. if not, damn.
is the bug where bad blocks caused an incomplete block to be written
on the archive fixed in one of the upcoming releases? would my fixing
the code myself help if the answer is no?
