Amanda Beeson <beeson@mit.edu> dropped by SIPB and observed that when
she logged in on a linux machine (since 9.2), every keystroke she
typed was doubled. This seemed to happen in both xterms and
gnome-terminals and emacsen.
I despaired at debugging this properly but concluded that moving aside
her .gconf directory solved the problem (after having moved aside all
the .gnome* stuff did not).
We preserved the old dotfiles in /mit/beeson/Public/configs.tar.gz.
