Matlab is failing to render all UI interface

Hi. A user came by SIPB today with a problem with Matlab: in its
"desktop" windows, in the place of important UI widgets like "OK"
buttons, there are extremely thick blue borders. I've repeated this
problem with my account with customizations turned off, and sipb0.
I started matlab from the menu (Gnome Footprint -> Math/Plotting ->
Matlab) and then typed "desktop" in the terminal that resulted.
