What's wrong:

At login, my Gnome panel does not automagically appear in the lower-left
corner.  Instead, it is an outline that has to be click-launched, as if
the X -geometry setting were lost.  No matter where on the screen it's
launched, the first time I click-to-expand the panel it moves to the
correct location.
