There's an amazingly simple explanation for what you saw.

All of the AFS server processes automatically restart at 4AM on
Sundays; it's a way of automatically "garbage collecting" whatever
cruft may have accumulated over time in the address spaces of the
processes..

I suspect that the reason why portnoy didn't see this was that it had
the appropriate pieces cached already.

Blame Mike Kazar for this wonderful idea.
