"un0: Ethernet not responding"

It would be nice to get rid of these messages, if indeed there is some
timeout value that can be tweaked somewhere (so that we still get the
messages if it really is disconnected)....

The Next House cluster RT's have the annoying habit of printing 2 x 10^20 copies
of the message "Un0: Ethernet not responding (is it connected?)" in the login
window. This must be because somebody started up the window using xterm -C.
But the real problem is that some timeout somewhere must be set wrong (since
it should just do 2 or 3 messages and then quit). Those electrons have a long
way to hike to get from athena to here.

Is there any way to fix this easily, quickly and cleanly?
