Somehow, it seems like the inconsistency between this recommendation
and Athena ought to be resolved, with IS presenting a consistent front.

Is virus protection on Unix machines something anyone really
cares about? If not, strike it from the literature.

If it is, then shouldn't Athena do something about it?

This message is not entirely tongue in cheek.

Subj: Reminder: Protect your computer(s) from Viruses

Jointly, Information Systems and our IT colleagues wish to raise awareness
about virus outbreaks on-campus. As a member of the MIT community, good
citizens should ensure that:

all computers owned by MIT and/or faculty, staff and students
accessing MIT's network have anti-virus software installed, configured and
running properly at all times.

If you do not have anti-virus software installed and running, you are
potentially risking your daily work and the work of your colleagues.

We wish to heighten everyone's awareness of the importance of properly
configured computers and lessen the risk of lost time and work. If you do
not have anti-virus software installed or the product you have installed is
not meeting your needs, MIT has a volume license with Network Associates
providing McAfee for Linux, UNIX, Windows and Virex for Macintoshes as our
recommended and supported product.

Most anti-virus software contains the ability to download updates from the
network. If your computer is a laptop and often disconnected from the
network, you may want to look at last-updated date to make sure it updated
recently, and run a manual update if necessary.

If you do not have anti-virus software installed, please review the
following website for more product information and software installation
instructions:

     <http://web.mit.edu/is/help/virus/virus-info.html>

In closing, if your Department is supported by a local technical resource,
please approach them with any questions or concerns. If you are supporting
yourself and have questions, please contact Computing Help Desk via e-mail
at <computing-help@mit.edu> or via phone at: (617) 253-1101.

Thanks,
Theresa

Note: Anti-virus software needs to be installed and configured properly on
all computers, including personally owned computers, accessing MIT's
network. Our license with Network Associates includes personally owned
computers of MIT faculty, staff and students. If your home computer is not
running anti-virus software, please consider installing the McAfee
product. More information is available
at: <http://web.mit.edu/is/help/virus/virus-info.html>
