I looked into this today when Tom contacted OLC for assistance.
The problem wasn't actually related to sshd at all. The problem
was AFS-related; AFS was hanging on attempts to read the user's home
directory. As I reported to Tom, rebooting the machine will fix this
temporarily; updating to the most recent Athena 9.1 patch release will
upgrade your AFS client to OpenAFS 1.2.8 and should fix it for good.
