I think previously working suspend/resume has been broken in

I've been experimenting with my laptops, and after some struggle updated
my IBM T30 to 9.1.22.
Previously, I could succeed at the following test:
Login
start XMMS with a file in AFS.
suspend
resume
And the song would continue playing.
Now, when I resume, the network never comes back until I do
/etc/init.d/network restart
by hand!
This is not good.
