You'd be so much happier doing these things from a Sun.
Some combination of a more recent Linux kernel (although
possibily when we went from 2.4.9-xx to 2.4.18-xx) and the older version
of OpenAFS we're running is to blame. I can backport patches, or we can
pull up OpenAFS 1.2.8 for 9.1.20. Given that 1.2.8 also seems to fix
Tom Cavin's bug, I'd suggest we take it.
