I may be out of date on this, but I do recall there being some known
problems with apm on thinkpads.

Have you taken a look at:
  http://www.linux-thinkpad.org/

I haven't done a careful search, but there's a lot of information out
there on the web, and since Athena uses a stock RedHat kernel, much of
it should be applicable.
