I have a record of having answered this but I don't recall my previous
reply, and it's too old to have been kept. At any rate, I checked on it in
passing again today, and it doesn't look like I can turn off the SSL
default selectively: If I turn it off when you create a new news account,
I also turn it off when you create a new mail account, and that we cannot
do - we really need to default to using SSL for MIT mail.
So right now, yes, if you create a news account, it will default to
talking using SSL/port 563, which news.mit.edu does not respond to.
However, if you uncheck the "use SSL" box in the account's configuration,
it will change back to port 119 automatically.
