The OLC consultants maintain a stock answer on this:

  Occasionally the tasklist applet (the group of icons on the panel with
  one icon per window) will mysteriously crash.

  If this is the case, you can still restore iconified windows by
  middle-clicking on the desktop, selecting "Windows", and selecting the
  iconified window you want to restore (it will be in [square brackets]
  if it's iconified).

  You can also restart the applet on the panel by right clicking in some
  blank space on the panel itself, and selecting:

      Add To Panel -> Applet -> Utility -> Tasklist

  Sometimes the clock may crash and vanish from the panel too. You can
  restart the clock applet on the panel by right clicking in some blank
  space on the panel itself, and selecting:

      Add To Panel -> Applet -> Clocks -> Clock
