X failed to start on GX150

A Dell GX150 recently installed by hotline, latchaw.mit.edu fails to
startup in X. The first time it was booted up, the X server attempted
spawning too often, and Init stopped trying
The owner of the machine then tried running Xconfigurator, with the
following settings:
PCI nVidia Varta NV6
XServer XSF86_SVGA
XFree4 Driver nv (default)
Monitor Probe
Viewsonic 21ps
Hor 30-80 Hz
Ver 50-160 Hz
memory = 16mb
No clockchip settings.
However, X still refused to startup.
