I believe we are the victim of some Red Hat updates in this regard. The
problem has been fixed for the 9.1 release.
Your workaround should be fine (that is, it shouldn't break anything in
the future). Our fix was to put "*ttyModes: erase ^?" in the XTerm
app-defaults for rhlinux; you'd want to ifdef them in .Xresources if you
use that approach.
