I think (but am not certain) that this is because you ran this on a
machine running Athena 8.4. Try building and running it on a machine
running Athena 9.0- if it works there that's your problem and you'll
need to upgrade to Athena 9.0; your other issue:

may be due to the same sort of thing- have you tried that on an Athena
9.0 machine? (though if Matlab 6 works for you you probably won't need to
do it that way).
