Since we'd just put out the new installer yesterday, I went and had a
look at this shortly after it was sent. It turns out that this wasn't an
install problem; the system in question had been shipped with reversed
cabling for the system drive and the CD-ROM, so the hardcoded /dev/hda
install was aimed at the CD-ROM.
He's now up and running with a manually-partitioned install, although
this pointed out another bug, namely that the default lilo configuration
loses if root isn't on /dev/hda7.
